Last week we discussed the forced choice one has when a power play is directed upon them. Those choices are withdrawal, destruction, absorption/transformation and imitation. The bottom line is anyone can choose power and no one can choose peace. What about the other side of the coin, when one is attempting to influence? When done skillfully, it can become leadership.
The literature on leaders and leadership is long, deep and historically, recurring. The one definition of leadership that is beyond repute is “a person who has followers”. Any other definition of leader and leadership is likely dicey, well researched and incomplete. Like learning, leadership is vital to our well-being and, in spite of the extensive research, as much undiscovered as is explainable. We know it when we see it; we are acutely aware of its absence; we crave it when it’s absent; usually distrust it when it comes from one person or group; and, if a common good has been served, admire it in hindsight.
Yet, everyone who wants to achieve something greater than that which can be accomplished alone will be expected to lead. And follow. And get out of the way.
